Ashwagandha is a perennial shrub in the nightshade family and has been used in Ayurveda for 1000’s of years. In herbal medicine it is the root that is used but the rest of the plant is an important source of food in India. The translation of Ashwagandha is roughly “horse smell” which is fairly accurate. While this is an herb normally cultivated in India, we have found a grower in Oregon that supplies a superior quality product. It costs more but it it make a better product and it's the right thing for the planet.
The main phytochemical constituents are withanolides which are triterpene lactones along with numerous alkaloids. The make up is like Ginseng and a common nickname is “Indian ginseng “.
